Back in July, I spent almost a week with my best friend in Fallon (the middle of nowhere), Nevada. When I say middle of nowhere, I mean the closest Target is more than 65 miles away! At the time, her son Jack was just 4 weeks old, and I was so eager to meet him! Isn’t he handsome?!
Get ready for baby overload people!
I just can’t help myself! : ) However, cute newborn photos are not actually the focus of this post. During my visit, I saw so many items for new mommies and infants I had never seen before. My husband and I are trying to start a family ourselves, so I started jotting down all of my girlfriends’ favorites on my cell to keep in mind. My friend is a nurse practitioner, so some of her recommendations were from her experience and knowledge in family health and working with experienced pediatric practitioners. I want to share them with you here because the information is practical and honestly, top secret! These are things I’ve never heard, and I have years of experience as a nanny, and a pediatric occupational therapist, with a toddler niece and nephew! So listen up, folks…I will be sharing a ton of great products to give your girlfriends for a baby shower or the birth of their child. I will also be sharing items every mom needs in order to save time, money, and sanity! And to feel like a woman, even though she may feel like a cow!
My Brest Friend
This is a nursing pillow, but unlike your typical nursing pillows, it is designed to wrap around your body and clip in the back. It has a firm, flat pillow to prevent baby from rolling away or into you while nursing. When my girlfriend wore it, she could actually stand up with it on and it wasn’t going anywhere, which is a big plus. And I almost forgot to mention, the cover is removable for machine wash.
Mustela Baby Products
The Mustela baby product line of lotion, shower gel, cradle cream shampoo, and no rinse cleansing water is a great choice for your bathtime rituals. The 60 year old company ensures all of its products are hypoallergenic, eco-friendly, dermatologically tested, and never contain parabens, phthalates, or phenoxyethanol. They are also fragrance free. My friend was using physiobebe on the days she skipped baths. You can find Mustela products at CVS, Walgreens, and Target to name a few. I have a few baby showers coming up so I am grabbing a few of these bundles. You get free shipping on orders over $40 here.
The Copper Pearl multi-use covers are my go-to purchase these days when I have a shower or need a congratulatory gift for a friend. They are under $30 (excluding shipping) on the Copper Pearl website, but I pick mine up through Amazon for $24.95 and prime shipping. These covers are functional and practical. They can be used as a car seat cover, a nursing blanket, a shopping cart or high chair insert, and even a scarf for mama! Throw in a set of their adorable bandanna bibs and get free shipping here.
The Wubba Nub is a life saver for mama’s! As an OT, I am thrilled when I see items like this hit the market! A baby’s most basic physiological needs (food, water, warmth, rest) must be met in order for a baby to thrive. Well, the 2nd tier of basic needs is safety needs (safety and security). The Wubba Nub is the perfect example of meeting an infant’s most basic needs. The pacifier helps to soothe the baby in order to sleep and rest. However, pacifiers often slip out of babies mouths’ and they have not developed the reach and refined grasp needed to get a hold of the paci to get it back in their mouth. The Wubba Nub pacifier is attached to a sort of beany baby, which provides a larger item for the baby to reach for, retain, and return the paci to his/her mouth. And if the infant is less than 3 months, he/she will instinctively and involuntarily grasped the Wubba Nub if it’s placed near his/her face. And oh my goodness, the new moose is so stinkin’ cute! Grab it here for less than $20 shipped!
Fisher-Price On-the-Go Baby Dome
A friend of a friend used it on a beach vacation with a 2 month old and apparently raved about it. It is easy to set up and break down, transport, and use anywhere. Great for the beach, park, or hotel, the baby dome can be closed to keep out bugs and block the sun, with built in UPF20 protection. It’s basically a compact pack and play that can be used day or night for napping or playing. These are sold at Target, Amazon, and Toys R Us. I linked it to Amazon where you can get it shipped for less than $50 with prime.
On Becoming Baby Wise
My girlfriend swears by this book. She says it was the most practical information in guiding her to get her infant into a sleeping and feeding cycle. Before she read the book, she was winging it, feeding her newborn whenever he was fussy, which resulted in him sleeping at random times, for very short periods, and eating every hour and a half. After a month or two, it was getting exhausting for her, but she thought it was too soon to really get him into a routine. Until she read the book. She soon realized it is never to early to get an infant into a sleep-wake-feed cycle and she began using the strategies in the book, in order to ease the transition back to her working full time and baby going to daycare. It worked and she is on the road to more sleep, despite basically being a single parent on occasion (her husband is currently out of town working for almost a month). She is truly a rock-star mom! ; )
Butt Cream Concoction
This one may sound silly, but the “butt cream concoction” is actually a cream my girlfriend put together for diaper rash. As a family nurse practitioner, she works with amazing pediatric doctors who advise her about all things baby and this was one of their recommendations. Side note: many diaper rash creams on the market are merely sunscreen. Check the ingredients on your diaper rash cream. If it says “zinc oxide,” it’s sunscreen. This is not beneficial to baby’s rash as it basically sits on the surface of the skin creating a barrier. It has no benefits for healing the pre-existing rash. The homemade cream is simple to make; equal parts coconut oil, Maalox, and Aquaphor. The best part—if you make a big batch, it will last you months because you need only small amounts to make a world of difference in healing. And even better, this cream does not get stuck on hands or in fabric like typical butt pastes, so it makes for simple diaper changing routines.
“For those ladies who are getting back to work.[The tank] is super stretchy and kind of sucks in your waist. And here is the bra. It is well worth the $30 because the strapless ones don’t support your breasts when the bottles get full and you just feel even more like a cow with saggy tits…” (hehe love her willingness to be so candid)! Also, this tank comes in 3 colors and you can find it at Target!
Fuse Nail Polish
This stuff is a thing of the future! It is the next step in gel nail polish. Like shellac polish. you need a UV light, but unlike it, you only need to complete 3 steps! It requires no base or top coat either! Just rub alcohol on the nail to clean it, paint the fuse color on your nail, and stick it under the light. The best part—a kit comes with the cleanser, gel color, lint free wipes, nail buffer, manicure stick, and a small portable light so you can paint your nails on the run. Toss it in your purse and you can fix a nail at work, in the bathroom at the grocery store, or even while traveling! : ) My only complaint, a limited number of colors available. Fuse currently carries only 12 colors. I hope they expand the line so I can use when I have little one running around!
Another God send for busy mom’s on the go…dry shampoo! Now, in my opinion, this is not a one size fits all item you can add to your list. Dry shampoo works differently with every different type of hair. Generally, something that works for brunettes doesn’t work for blondes and the same goes for thin versus thick hair. Grease likes to show up and be a nasty b**** when we need to get out the door in a pinch, so finding the right dry shampoo for YOU and your hair type is essential. I am linking a few I’ve used and love and one that comes highly recommended by other blondes (I have not had the chance to try it).
|I’ve never tried this, but everyone raves about it on Insta!|
|I used this for a bit after my brunette girlfriend
gave it to me because she didn’t like it. I was happy with
the look and “okay” with the feel of my hair,
but it had a weird smell.
|I just grabbed a travel size of this stuff when I was in
Sonoma and I fell in love! It makes my hair look
and feel clean and smells yummy!
And now, I will send you off with more ridiculously cute baby photos! If you have any must-haves for new moms I didn’t share, please comment below so we can spread the word together!
Most recent photo of Jack at 3 months. Happy boy!
