Poppyseed Ross: 6 Week Bumpdate

September 18, 2018

18 Sep
It’s week 6 and poppyseed Ross is the size of a sweet pea. I can’t say the last few days have been pleasant, because frankly, they’ve been anything but that. The sleepless nights crept up on me Friday and it threw me for a loop. Up until 6 weeks, I’d get up throughout the night to pee or wake up in the wee hours of the morning (between 4 and 530) and I was tired, but I it was not a struggle to fall asleep. I would get random periods of energy, which consisted of cleaning out every crevice of closets and drawers throughout our home, and even the trunk of my car. But now, I really struggle with insomnia. I can’t fall asleep, then one second I roll over freezing cold, throw on a bunch of layers, and 5 minutes later, I’m stripping down because I am so hot and uncomfortable.

Not to mention this sore throat and congestion that kicked in on Sunday. That did me in on Monday morning. No sleep Sunday night, and come 7am Monday I felt worse than I have since I found out I was pregnant and maybe even since my egg retrieval. I knew I had to go to work because it’s the first Monday we’ve actually been in school since the start of this school year. I could not start with a list of make-ups this early in the year, especially for a Monday, my busiest day of the week.

So I mustered up all the strength and determination I had and got myself to work. I lugged all my bags (as all of us school based therapists’ do) into my office, barely making it to my chair. Thank goodness I did not have a session first thing. I laid my head down for a few minutes, then I got up to fill my water bottle, sign in, and throw my lunch box in the fridge. Every few steps I had to stop because I felt like I was going to pass out. And I was holing on to the hand rail in the hallway. It was rough and I did not know how I was going to see the kids for OT. But I kept moving, kept drinking water, and kept taking breaks to stop and slow down when I needed them. I think that was the trick because by my 3rd session, around 10:30, I no longer felt like I was going to pass out and could bear to make it through the day. I finished out the day strong at my OT team meeting and even documented all of my session notes. Woohoo, go me! I feel like I may still have a cold working on me, but am wondering if it isn’t just allergies with all of this crazy Maryland weather. Let’s hope for the latter!

6 weeks cravings: carbs, carbs, and more carbs! Currently craving everything bagel with cream cheese, ravioli, rice, velveeta shells and cheese.
My appetite is very limited in the morning so I am sticking with smoothies and my Jimmy protein bars. I loved those before I was pregnant! I rarely snack like I used to, maybe twice a day versus six times a day, and that’s on a good day when I am not feeling nauseous. And my biggest appetite is around dinner time. A friend gave me Preggo Pop Drops and they are sour heaven, so I am popping them like candy! Whether they work or it’s just a placebo affect, I’ll take it!

Any of my readers currently pregnant in your first trimester? Did you just get through your first trimester? What were your cravings? Did you get a lot of morning sickness? Would love to hear in the comments!
